A City of You

I arrived home. The sky was tenebrous as if it was crying for my homecoming. Clouds were veiling heaven like hand-sewn lace trousseaus. The Portuguese pavement was spreading out in front of my eyes, always untrustworthy and perfectly slippery to make me tip over. I could lay eyes on the imposing castle, rising above all the houses of long standing and the groves that danced with each other, as if they had a life of their own. The castle had woken up to relish in the nightfall. The stones and fortifications were sheltered with a beauteous golden hue, just like my golden hair covered your chest in the dawn that followed a night full of high spirits. The lights of the rusty black steel lamps had lighted up, while the sun had decided to fall asleep and the stars had prepared to do what they were born to do: shine. I had begun to slide through the Luís de Camões garden. The bushes, which did not cross my waist, walked hand in hand with me like a child. The arbors began to change their vestments. The archetypal green had been stripped down, leaving the limbs of the arbors delivered only to the unavoidability of their nudity. Some of them were dressed with seas of flames that only reminded me of you. The wine-colored ton of your lips or the warm tone of your skin.
I strolled through the dark benches of iron fully clad with names of lovers promising a “till death do us apart”, when they are already apart. The majestic trees rose as the Red Sea did to let Moses cross. The water of the fountain ascended to the sky and then bowed before it, accepting its place among the stones of the sidewalk.

I had reached the finale of the garden and Luís de Camões had nothing more to offer me but the realization that "true affection in the long absence proves itself". I perceived this irrefutable reality, because I felt it in every part of my body. Since, on the other side of the boulevard, there was you. Leiria had disappeared before me as if I had gone blind for a few moments. But this could not be true, because I had laid my eyes on you, as if God had come down to Earth and I had suddenly become a devotee. The leaves were falling beside me and I was falling in love with you.
